About the Region of Lovech

Lovech has 50 000 residents and is situated on the two banks of the Osum River. It is at a distance of 160 km from the Capital Sofia, 36 km from Pleven and 36 km from Troyan.
The Thracians were the oldest population in these lands. It is a successor of the Thracian settlement, called Melta, which this day is speculated to have been the capital of the Thracian tribe Melts. It was an important military center during the Middle Ages. The well - preserved fortress, discovered in the area, called Hissarya, and situated on a rocky hill, was particularly prominent for the establishment of the Second Bulgarian State.

At the time of the Ottoman domination Lovech became popular with its crafts - leather - working and furriery, that were profitable and the town was called "Altin Lovec", meaning Golden Lovech.

In 1784 Lovech was siege and burnt down by the Turkish invaders. It is not accidental that the town was chosen by Vassil Levski as the capital of the Bulgarian Revolutionary Committee.

Today Lovech is a modern town, and its cultural and historical heritage has been preserved up to the present day. The Levski museum is one of the most visited places. Here tourists can see his original portrait and a great number of his belongings. The only covered bridge in Bulgaria over the Osum River is located in Lovech. It was built by the great Bulgarian master Kolyu Ficheto. In 1925 the bridge was burnt but later was renovated.

In 1969 the ancient district called Varosha was declared a historical and an architectural reserve. In Varosha are the churches "Uspenie Bogorodichno" (The church of The Holy Mother) - 1784 and "St. Nedelya - 1535", proclamed monuments of culture. The Historical museum keeps numerous archaeological and ethnographic exponents.

The first Bulgarian astronaut Georgi Ivanov was born in Lovech. 20 km southeast of Lovech, in the north sides of the Balkan range is situated the village of Stefanovo where is located an architectural reserve, called "Old Stefanovo".
