The town of Gabrovo is situated along the two banks of the Yantra River, at the northern foot of the Central Stara planina. It is situated 220km north-east of Sofia, 274km south-west of Varna, 46km south-east of Veliko Turnovo, and 28km south-east of Sevlievo.
It is situated in the immediate proximity of the geographical centre of Bulgaria and it itself is a centre of humour and jokes.
The unique in South-eastern Europe open-air ethnographic museum “Etara” is situated 8km south of the centre of Gabrovo. It is located in the quarter of the same name on the bank of the Siveck river (at the distance of 3km from the road-fork to Shipka) on the north flanks of the Stara planina Mountains. It covers an area of 60 decares at an altitude of 400 meters.
Bojentzi is a small village situated on the north flanks in the central parts of the Stara planina mountain range at an altitude of 750 meters, 16km east of Gabrovo and 40km from Veliko Turnovo. The village is architectural and historical reserve with 600 years old history.
According to the legend, the village was founded by a noble-woman, whose name was Bojana, who found shelter with her nine sons in the mountains after Veliko Turnovo was conquered by the Turks in 1393.
Under the peak of Ispolin, in the heart of the Stara planina mountain, 22km from the town of Gabrovo, 1249m above sea level, is located the place of “Uzana” - the geographical center of Bulgaria. It is charming with the crystal clear air, marvelous nature and serenity. It is a starting point for many tourist routes and tracks to beautiful places in the region and to the peaks of Shipka and Buzludja. Uzana offers terms for summer and winter tourism. In the summer season, the place offers wonderful opportunities for recreation. Cool swimming pools, volleyball, gathering of herbs, mushroom, and berry are only a part of the pleasures. For the fans of horse riding there is a horse riding club in “Uzana”.
In the winter “Uzana” is a lovely place for mountain sports. In one of the most spacious meadow there are ski-tracks with drags and ski wardrobe. For experienced skiers there is a 1,200 m long ski-track with a ski-drug, and for beginners and children several shorter and easier runs, mini-drags, and ski-schools. Those who prefer just to observe the white scenery can use horse-driven sledges. After a long day, full of new emotions and experiences, “Uzana” welcomes its guests to the warm and cozy hotels and lodges.
