The town of Veliko Turnovo is situated in the central part of North Bulgaria at the foot of the Balkan Mountains at 250km from the capital of Bulgaria - Sofia.
Historians date it back to 4th millenium B.C. Veliko Tarnovo is the former capital of the Second Bulgarian Kingdom (1185-1396) and a symbol of the Bulgarian nationhood. Probably the most outstanding landmark of the town is the medieval fortress of Tsarevets - the ramparts, the Baldwin Tower, the royal Palace and Patriarchate, the Palace Church St Petka and a multitude of small cross-domed churches. It became the most significant political, economic, cultural and religious center of Bulgaria.
Modern Veliko Turnovo develops dynamically but still is a town-museum rich in many cultural museums, monuments and architectural sites. Every year the town is visited by thousands of Bulgarian and foreign tourists. The preservation of the ancient history of Bulgaria is not only the prime concern of the Veliko Turnovo Municipality, but of the whole Bulgarian nation.
The beautiful defiles of the river Yantra outline the three hills – Tsarevets, Sveta gora and Trapezitsa and shape the unique townscape.
The city is situated in the central part of the North Bulgaria and stands at 210 m altitude. It is located 242 km northeast of Sofia and 229 km southwest of Varna. The city is situated in the plains of Stara planina (The Balkan), bisected by the Yantra river and its feeders. The river forms a zigzag formation leaving behind a hill in-between its diameters. The city rises in tiers, which gives the city a specials architectural outlook.
Еxcavations made in the hills of Tsaravets, Trapezitsa, Sveta Gora (Holy wood) prove that the area was inhabited as far back as in the hoary antiquity.
Its efflorescence the town reached after successful uprising of the two boyars, the two brothers Assen and Peter. Then the city became the capital of the Second Bulgarian State. Tarnovo was the second most greatest and magnificent city in the Balkans after Constantinople.
During the Revival period, the city regained its political, economical and cultural rise. Different crafts developed, the trade blossommed. Veliko Tarnovo became the spiritual center in the fight for national liberation and religious independence.
In June 1877 Tarnovo was liberated and the first constitution -Tarnovska - was created.
The hill of Tsarevets, which houses the king`s palaces, attracts the tourists. Here are the remains of the throne- room and the palace church. The patriarchal palace is erected on the crest of the hill. 47 churches and 400 residential houses have been discovered in the whole complex. Fortified walls and defensive towers surround the city. The tower of Baldwin is the most famous and it is an evidence for the power of the Bulgarian kingdom.
To the north of Tzarevets is the Sveta Gora hill (Holy Wood). St. St. Cyril and Methodius University of Veliko Tarnovo is located there.
A great number of architectural and cultural monuments have been built in the period of Bulgarian national revival. The most interesting cultural and historical houses are the Konac (Turkish town hall) and the House with the monkey, Hadjinikolaev han (Hadjinikolay`s inn), Samovodska charshia (ancient market place with picturesque craftsmen shops), such as numerous churches, the oldest of which are St. Peter and Paul, St. Dimitar Solunski, St. George, St. 40 Martyrs churches.
In the evening from the hill of Tsarevets, there are illuminations and audio narrating the historical details of the city.
