The city of Rousse is located on the right bank of the Danube river, in the mouth of Rusenski Lom River. Its population is about 162000 people and it stands 105 km to the north of Veliko Tarnovo, 202 km to the northwest of Varna and 320 km to the northeast of Sofia. A Thracian tribe called Ghetti is supposed to have settled in that area around 6th - 5th centuries BC. Later, Romans built the fortress of Seksaginta Prista. It was destroyed during the numerous attacks of the Slavs, and rebuilt by the Bulgarian people in the XI-XII centuries. In the 19th century Rousse became a port centre and the first railway, connecting Varna and Rousse, was constructed. The city became bigger and became one of the biggest and most flourishing centers in Bulgaria. The first insurance company, the first Bulgarian bank, the first weather service were opened here and the first Bulgarian newspaper was published in Rousse, too. Most of the buildings in Rousse are in European style and their architectural appearance still impresses the visitors.
