Melnik is the smallest Bulgarian town, picturesquely situated amidst a fantastic scenery - strangely shaped pyramids of sand and limestone. Melnik is at a distance of 20 km from the town of Sandanski and is linked through an asphalt road (12 km) to Sofia-Athens international road. Nestled amongst the lowest south-western fold of Pirin, it combines in it the memory of a prosperous past with the pastoral cosiness and the unique in its kind countryside. The beautiful fortress-like houses with broad wine-cellars cut in the limestone rocks date from this period. Town of Melnik is one of the most fascinating towns-museums in Bulgaria. 96 buildings are cultural monuments. The specific terrain made people fight for each square foot of land. That is why the Melnik houses seem perched one above the other, so close as though they are whispering something to each other. Distance to capital city: 129.828 km from Sofia Area size of Town of Melnik: 6.464km2
